Survey: Does Porn Influence Your Sexual Behavior?

(Photo Credits: MEN – Save 50% Today)

How likely are you to copy what you’ve seen from a gay porn movie?

We are asking because last month, in our article titled, “Better Sex through Gay Porn?” Davey Wavey related how he’d been told by a college boyfriend this: “Having sex with you is like being in a porn.” Davey Wavey then proceeded to explain how he learned gay sex from porn and how, in retrospect, he imitated the porn actors by acting out what he saw onscreen to his real-life bedroom activities.

But Davey Wavey is hardly alone in this regard. A study titled “Viewing of Internet-Based Sexually Explicit Media as a Risk Factor for Condomless Anal Sex among Men Who Have Sex with Men in Four U.S. Cities” showed that people are more likely to imitate the material they watched. Take a look at their findings below:

  • around 92% of the respondents watched anal bareback sex
  • 48% admitted that this influenced them into engaging in riskier sex
  • 23% had bareback sex immediately after viewing
  • Conversely, if the actors wore condoms, the survey participants were more likely to do so the next time they had sex
  • 55% of the participants said they sought sex hours after watching porn
  • 70% of the respondents admitted to acting out what they watched

There were 265 gay and bisexual men surveyed, all of whom had watched porn in the past three months prior to the survey and resided within 50 miles of New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore or Washington DC. Said study was published in the scientific journal PLOS ONE (Public Library of Science), and can be read in full here.

What about you, guys? How true are the findings of this study for you? Are you also likely to have sex hours after watching porn? Wear condom or go bareback depending on the porn movie you’ve watched? How likely are you to copy what you’ve watched? Share with us your thoughts and stories in the comments section below.

Yes, totally. I would never have tried rimming otherwise. But I limit it very much. It does influence my manner of making out. Sadly, it does influence the other men. After some kissing, they just want to dive on my cock and jerk it around, treating it rough. That is a major fault with porn as instruction, they skip almost all foreplay, even nipple-sucking, and present cocksucking in such a mechanical fashion, as much as the mechanical fucking as if they were straight guys. Porn “stars” must have really “fucke-up” sphincters, they way they get pounded. Ouch. Straight men give much better head, in my experience. They are cock-focused, not performance focused. Their concentration is better. Gay men don’t know what they’re doing, or they’re just trying to please themselves. The straight guys have learned to please their partner. Too few gay men do. And don’t get me started on the dirty talk or barebacking. Porn is very dangerous. It really interferes with dating and relationship forming. Especially with older guys who have become slutty and piggish, addicted to sex and incapable of love, just an erotic lifestyle. It’s pathetic, and not at all healthy. That’s why we have to look for young men, because they haven’t been ruined yet. Hopefully.

P.S., Just look at the obscene profile photos if you want to see porn’s influence. It’s not hot to see a guy’s gaping asshole or genitals first. You should require face or whole-body photos for profiles.

For sure it does mine… it’s turned me into a slut… I like being gang banged and used like a white whore by men of color… and used for a cum dump

I thought like that and can say some things I copied from watching porn but I had my first sexual encounter before I ever saw a porn movie. My perception of porn then changed when I did my first scene. However I agree with more what it says because porn is showing fantasy a might help you to satisfy in the real scenario.

  5. PostGayGrandDad

Porn is fantasy. Sex is real life. I don’t expect to swing from spider webs or have high speed chases that I see in films, so why would I expect to have sex without a condom.

I have had partners who obviously thought porn was real and would deliver a non-stop monologue of strings of steamy, turgid adjectives that followed thrustingly exciting adverbs and creamy verbs that slammed into otherwise boring body part descriptors. When their voices flipped into falsetto screams on entry I usually just pull out and hand their clothes.

watching Porn is about jacking off and getting off…all these statistics about watching it and going out after to have sex sound highly unlikely to me.

having done porn, it is rarely fun and usually hard work (no pun intended) unfortunately, I do see more and more porn scenes with choking and/or spitting. while there are some sub/masochistic guys around that may be into that, try it with me and you will be out the door followed by your clothes, phone and keys.

I think there is no question that porn has influenced the way we as gay & bisexual men have sex. For one thing, 20 years ago there were many more tops, whereas now virtually everyone seems to be looking to bottom. I suspect part of this is that porn videos make anal sex their primary focus and make bottoming look very attractive (which of course it can be). Guys just come in off the street and have at it when we know that being clean takes some forethought.

20 years ago when the memory of our friends and lovers dying of AIDS right and left was still fresh, you were ostracized if you wanted to bareback. Now porn sites FEATURE barebacking and extol how hot it is–and of course if you are HIV-Pos undetectable or on PrEP, your chances of spreading or getting the virus are very low, low enough to make barebacking almost the norm. (Certainly it is in the big cities.)

Also the sex acts featured in porn affect us. Who ever sees oral sex except as the foreplay to fucking? And a few years ago virtually no one had even heard of double penetration and now it’s quite the rage. (I admit I have tried it, and aside from requiring the most insane acrobatics to get into position, relaxing enough to take two dicks up your ass at the same time must be similar to what it takes to be fisted.)

I must say that men who have had some experience with women are often better fucks because they have been trained to think of their partner’s pleasure. If some guy is fucking me in the ass I don’t want him to just climb on and flail away like a porn star until he gets off: I want him to start off slowly and vary his speed (and maybe our position) and then finish off by riding me hard. And then I want him to lie in my arms and enjoy some ‘afterglow’ something you almost never see in porn. But then you never see much real affection in porn videos either in in that regard I think we’ve been gypped.

I’m not against porn but I certainly wouldn’t want to be addicted to it nor would I want it to be my only point of reference for sex and relationships.

I think it depends on how good a critical thinker an individual is. I have learned about some interesting erotic positions, locations, etc. from some porn videos. I would think that most people realize that watching porn is an exaggerated fantasy just as is watching a good summer blockbuster movie. However, watching porn did result in me buying my own portable sling. There is something highly erotic about getting fucked somewhere other than the bed.

  9. Lamar

Nope, not at all, that’s the problem, “monkey see, monkey do,” trying to imitate non-reality, that’s the minds or lack thereof, “typical” Americans.

  10. WestOrangeLover

This is funny. Some guys, in my opinion, see porn as hot sex and try to duplicate it in their real lives. What is really hot is when a guy starts exploring your body with his hand, mouth and other body parts. It gets even better when you do the same thing. Watching your partner cum while you are cumming is mind blowing!

  11. latinlust69

Porn is fantasy. Is a good way to warm up into having sex with a guy. I grew up with natural sex before it was called bareback and still prefer it that way. Though i admit I’d never tried to get a guy to get dp until i saw it in a porn. Or a double spit roast (2 guys 69 while each get fucked)
Porn as inspiration. Or as stimulation while getting blown at the ABS.

  12. oral4oral

i’m not into anal, and the times i do allow it. it’s a finger or a toy and that’s it, i have tried anal sex and it’s just not what i find exciting or stimulating. i have always been a big fan of oral sex, that was how i was introduced to being with another guy. maybe since i was younger and my encounters were always with older men, none ever pressed on the issue of anal sex, probably because they enjoyed my young cock, and would let them suck it for as long as they wished. if i do watch gay porn, if it isn’t oral related i don’t get into it. i respect that we all have our things with what makes us horny, and it wouldn’t make sense to engage in an activity which you don’t find stimulating.

  13. Brendon Gray

I think our sex lives influence porn…I’m not more likely to seek out sex hours after watching because the reason I’m watching porn is to bleed that pressure valve off a bit so I’m not worried about sex later..i took care of it…and as far as bareback /safe etc. that’s between you and the other party…and if I’m getting that intimate I’m gonna be sure there’s nothing to worry about for us both because I lived through the 80’s and 90’s and that shit aint no joke…Believe it or not internet porn han’t always existed and back in the day we had to survive off magazines and the occasional super 8 film loop at the local porn store…and not all of us pushing 50 are irrelevant and unattractive ….We fucked real good back then as well and porn wasn’t easy to get..especially gay porn… we learned from each other…and some people are just born with the ability to fuck good..so…no i don’t think our sex is influenced by porn…Like I said I think the porn is influenced by us and the way we get off….because its a formula that has been proven to squirt, I mean work….and that’s what gets clicks

  14. David9000

From a young age, I was into butt play. I must have been 15 or so. I never watched any gay porn nor did I consider it “porn” to fuck my ass. It felt naughty and good and that’s why I did it. Later on, I came to understand that anal sex was mainly associated with gay sex even though at that time I did not see myself as gay nor bi. I was attracted to girls and only watched and looked at straight porn. It’s really a mystery to me how I became so fixated on sucking dick because I had never thought about it at all as a young guy. I never watched porn with the intent to see guys blowing each other or fucking each other. However, when I got to college in my 20s, the urge to suck cock became stronger. I bought my first dildo and sucked my first “cock.” It was so huge that I could barely fit my mouth around it. I would rub my precum all over it and pretend it was the real thing. I was not watching any gay porn at this time. I was just so turned on by this new “thing.” Only now, years later do I watch porn, both straight and gay, and get off on facials. I don’t think I’d be as interested in getting sprayed with jizz if not for porn, but as far as my entry into trying gay sex, that was all natural.

  15. Dudesdude1

For sure porn has educated me to some really fun stuff. I’m already an expert kisser but like another poster, I wouldn’t have tried rimming unless I saw it in porn first. And I found out I love rimming. An oral position I love is hanging a dude on his back over the side of the bed and face fucking him – I learned that from porn. For me, that’s very hot!

  16. Slutbomb

It’s strange, because of the amateur porn movement (with real amateurs, not first time porn starlets) tends to be a lot more mimetic to reality because it is real sex. Personally, I hate mainstream commercial gay porn on so many levels due to the fact that it is so regressive in terms of race, sexual compartmentalization (tops and bottoms), gonzo sexual acts, yes I know it’s fantasy, but who’s fantasy? To those who believe that gay porn makes guys bareback, bare a king existed centuries before gay porn, so that is false equivalency, raw sex is a natural human impulse, the fear death and disease is learned.

    • Mr Frank

I would take exception to the false equivalency anology only because the use of condoms to protect against disease and pregnancy is also centuries old, tho yes it is learned behavior. However I agree that mainstream gay porn is regressive as well as both compartmenralized and humorless, and thus does not reflect what goes on in my bed. And I hate the way most of it fetishicizes certain racial stereotypes (black men for instance) and virtually ignores others groups (like Asian men). But I guess we as a ‘community’ of consumers vote with our pocketbooks, for better or for worse.

  17. Jerry

I have watched porn since teen however then I was ready to go. Now watching porn does nothing no matter how much I watch so I quit and found it a waste of time.

  18. GamerByNature

It effects more than just one’s sexual encounters, but also how one’s ethnic and social background is viewed as well.

As a gay black man who prefers to bottom, I am constantly inundated by all manner of gay and bi men who have no desire to actually get to know me. I am immediately accosted with their fantasy of me being their rough thuggish top or the ever degrading BBC (Big Black Cock) fantasy and am rarely seen beyond those tropes.

It isn’t jist black men who fall prey to this. White young twinks are largely solicited by older men to the point where you will have someone in their 50s or 60s only interested in smooth young things in their 20s

Jocks who are suppose to be Bi and mainly tops only…the list goes on. These are all tropes glorified in porn and it creates a divide between many of us to the point where one wonders why they can’t make a genuine connection with anyone.

  19. bob

yes it has definitely influenced me. i rented porn vhs tapes in college and for a year never jacked off. i did not know how to. it was watching porn where i learned to actually jack off and cum. that was a long time ago and it has helped educate me over the years. now it is just what i make do with if I can’t find a guy to be with.
I have only barebacked a few times in a several week period years ago. but it was influenced by watching porn movies. I realized how good it felt but stopped relatively quickly as I knew it could give me an std.

  20. BBBottom

Love porn. Loved sex since I was very young. As someone who was allergic to the chemicals in plastics, including latex and even poly condoms/sheepskin etc. watching porn with actors using condoms reminds me of the horrible allergic reactions I had once I hit my late teens. Before that it was all bareback, and he loved fucking me and breeding me… I liked making him happy. But the first three times I tried to bottom where the guy wore a condom, it was a horrible painful nightmare. Blistering rashes that actually sent me to the doctor. I confirmed this by putting a condom on and within 2 minutes i had a reaction. What his this taught me? Be extra careful about your partners and be choosy. And if you are lucky enough to afford prep and find someone else on prep, then life can be great…

  21. DayShadow

It would if it was as hot as my sex life, as I find pornography a little lacking. Too much of it that I’ve seen has men that aren’t very good at giving head or don’t know how to ride a cock well.

  22. Brk.bad

Love porn. Watching porn got me so horny it stimulates me to start cruising cl and hookup. I got hooked and met guys everywhere after that. Porn ships, websites, apps, cruise areas, work, restrooms…. Watching gloryhole porn turned me on to it.. I set one up and have sucked hundreds if dicks thru it.

    No regrets. Love it

  23. Seaguy

I take porn for what it is entertainment not education. I consider myself to be intelligent enough to watch bareback porn but then not go imitating what I saw onscreen because that was produced for entertainment and is edited and may have had some parts faked so you are not seeing everything that occurred while they were having sex, therefor trying to imitate that in your own sex life is going to end up a big letdown, when things are not the totally hot time with not awkward moments like in the porn you watched.
